GIONET "GMES Initial Operations - Network for Earth Observation Research Training" is a €3.5 million project funded by the People Programme under the European Seventh Framework Programme.
GIONET will establish the first European Centre of Excellence for Earth Observation Research Training for Early Stage Researchers in cutting-edge methodologies underpinning the GMES land monitoring and emergency monitoring core services.
The new centre is a partnership of leading Universities, research institutes and private companies from across Europe. GIONET will recruit 14 early stage researchers for three-year doctoral projects.
The GIONET researchers will be trained to understand the complex physical processes that determine how electromagnetic radiation interacts with the atmosphere and the land surface to ultimately form the signal received by a satellite. In order to achieve this these researchers will be placed in industry and universities across Europe, as well as receiving the best technical training and scientific education.
This training will be delivered through individually supervised research, international summer schools and local training. The training programme through supervised research focuses on five main areas: forest monitoring, land cover change, coastal zone and freshwater monitoring, geohazards and emergency response as well as climate adaptation and emergency response.
The 2nd GIONET Summer School has now been announced. This year‘s theme is “Remote sensing of land cover and forest in GMES“. The Summer School will be held at the University of Leicester from 18th-28th of September. Attendance is open for up to 16 external participants. The programme is aimed at postgraduate researchers (PhD level or equivalent), although postdoctoral researchers can be considered.
